The Watch Tower, Metheringham Airfield, Blankney Fen, Lincoln

We are currently underway with a project preparing detailed drawings and building regulations information for the conversion of the former control tower at Metheringham Airfield. The project is to be constructed by local contractor S Reid Services and work is due to start in Spring.

The control tower is to be converted into a new 3 bedroom dwelling with the living room at first floor making full use of the balcony which wraps around the nearly half of the building and provides access to the roof. The former tender shelter which was constructed of a Nissen hut is to be used as holiday accomodation and is to be sited in the original location.

The building will not be connected to mains sewers so a package treatment plant will be used to process foul water. The surface water is harnessed by the use of rain water harvesting adding to the buildings sustainability credentials.

The proposal is a great example of a restoration project and close attention has been paid to the original construction details in order to mimic the original appearance of the building using modern building materials. In order to replicate the original look of the building the original windows are to be replaced with modern metal framed windows by Crittal. The drainage is to be concealed so that no external gullies or soil vent pipes are used.

We look forward to seeing the project complete and will post images during construction and once completed.

Architectural Project: Crossroads Cottage, Swinderby

Out of all of the Architects in Lincoln Origin Design Studio were appointed as the Architectural Designers for this redevelopment of an old bakery room to form new accommodation in the rural village of Swinderby, Lincolnshire. The design brief was to create living space with an integrated double garage at the ground floor and two bedrooms with en suites and a study at the first floor.

We gave two architectural impressions to the client for the design of the project. A modern design with vertical combination windows, white rendered walls, grey aluminum window frames and timber cladding details. This approach was an attempt to separate the new construction from the traditional  architectural style of the existing building and create two distinct elements to the property.

The alternative design was for a more conservative traditional architecture in keeping with the existing dwelling with dormers front and rear, timber framed windows, black fascia boards and white painted brickwork.

At the end of the scheme developments the clients chose the traditional option.
