We are currently underway with a project preparing detailed drawings and building regulations information for the conversion of the former control tower at Metheringham Airfield. The project is to be constructed by local contractor S Reid Services and work is due to start in Spring.

The control tower is to be converted into a new 3 bedroom dwelling with the living room at first floor making full use of the balcony which wraps around the nearly half of the building and provides access to the roof. The former tender shelter which was constructed of a Nissen hut is to be used as holiday accomodation and is to be sited in the original location.

The building will not be connected to mains sewers so a package treatment plant will be used to process foul water. The surface water is harnessed by the use of rain water harvesting adding to the buildings sustainability credentials.

The proposal is a great example of a restoration project and close attention has been paid to the original construction details in order to mimic the original appearance of the building using modern building materials. In order to replicate the original look of the building the original windows are to be replaced with modern metal framed windows by Crittal. The drainage is to be concealed so that no external gullies or soil vent pipes are used.

We look forward to seeing the project complete and will post images during construction and once completed.

Origin has won a contract to provide architectural design services and project management for a large detached property in Grantham, Lincolnshire. The project will be submitted to SKDC for planning at the end of 2012.

The project brief is to provide a loft conversion, rear extension and refurbishment for the whole of the house.

We are very excited about this project and will provide regular updates about this.

Front elevation of property

The house has built pre second world war in 1938. The front has muted art deco features around the ground floor windows and entrance.

The proposal will modernise the ground floor layout to become a more fashionable open plan arrangement. The proposal seeks to take advantage of the garden vista by providing a large expanse of glazing.

The design brief was to create living space with an integrated double garage at the ground floor and two bedrooms with en suites and a study at the first floor.

We gave two architectural impressions to the client for the design of the project. A modern design with vertical combination windows, white rendered walls, grey aluminum window frames and timber cladding details. This approach was an attempt to separate the new construction from the traditional architectural style of the existing building and create two distinct elements to the property.

Our Listed barn conversion project in Tealby is finally underway. We went to visit site yesterday and have taken a few photos to share. So far construction work has been for the strip out of the existing building saving the salvageable features. Unfortunately the building was in such poor condition the roof and floors had to be condemned as they were totally unusable. As a result the building has been stripped back to a mere five walls, one of which is to be reconstructed to avoid the underpinning of the whole wall. The conservation project is for the conversion of the barn to form a new habitable space and is expected to be completed later this year. We look forward to bringing you further updates about this architectural conservation project.

31 days left and its time for part 2 of our blogs on architecture of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Next up we look at the Aquatics Centre. This is Origin’s personal favourite, created by Zaha Hadid Architects and has all the ultra modernism and aspiration we’ve come to expect from the in vogue architects. We imagine that many architects in Lincoln and across the world will marvel at this building in many years to come.

Our intial impression was that the canopy over the main entrance looked like a giant whale fin emerging from the sea to provide rain shelter for visitors whilst an aerial view looks more like a mantaray gliding across the ocean bed. However the narrative of the form was developed not from sea creatures but the swimmers form, makes sense really, and a second glance reveals a butterfly kick on the ceiling and the overarm shape of the butterfly stoke on the outside. The ceiling of the venue has lighting fixed into eliptical recesses which give the impression of condensed coalesced water droplets forming on a cold suface. As an internal space, and like most Zaha Hadid designs, its conceptual design provides a flood of inspiration for all those interested in futurism.

The wings on each side of the building are temporary additions for the games and boost the seating capacity from 6000 to 20,000. After the games the wings will be removed and the sides enclosed and supported by an arrangement of structure which look like sets of stairs leading up to a diving board.

The Aquatics Centre has certainly got its pricetag, originally estimated to cost £75 million the bill currently stands at over £250 million and the final bill will not be returned until well after the Olympic Games. We do think it’s easy to be an extravagant architect with an open cheque book, let’s hope you got this one on a percentage of the build cost! However it does amaze us how such a large project can run three and a half times the original budget cost. Surely the best were on the job. Did the main contractor not manage to screw their sub contractors on this one? Or did the QS forget to count by a factor of four? Perhaps with such a grand vision the taxpayer should just accept the costly bill, even in a double dip recession. After all until we can measure and value the physiological response of a human being how are we to really know whether this was worth the extra £175 million.
